The DUET Co-Culture System is:

How it works:
- Same size as a 96-wells plate: compatible with practically every existing microtiter-plate readers (including of course Cerillo's Stratus).
- Wells (square and larger than the 96-wells plates: 36 in total) are paired in Duets and are seperated by a porous semi-transparent membrane (0,8 micrometer filter).
- Populations (e.g. bacteria, fungi or viruses) are seperated by the membrane because of their size, but the substances they produce / take in are small enough to move through the filter.
- This allows for the interactions between 2 different populations to be measured very carefully, without chance for any cross contamination or such matters. Interaction examples are: how does pop. 1 react to pop. 2? Does pop. 1 produce a substance that inhibits pop. 2? etc.
- The Stratus plate reader can define the growth of microorganims within the wells through their change in colour (more microorganisms generally means a more saturated color).
- The duets can be removed from their plate, which makes the preparing of samples and/or taking samples for other experiments even easier. It also becomes much easier to put the wells under a microscope for example.
